Blackburn with Darwen Elections are Back on!

The Blackburn with Darwen borough council elections are officially back on following a dramatic reversal by the UK Government and here’s exactly how it unfolded.

Earlier this year, the Government made the decision to cancel or postpone certain local elections, including those in Blackburn with Darwen. The justification centred around proposed changes to local governance arrangements and timing concerns, but the move sparked immediate backlash. Many residents and political groups argued that cancelling scheduled elections effectively removed the public’s right to choose their local representatives.

In response, Reform UK launched a judicial review—a legal challenge questioning whether the Government had the lawful authority to cancel the elections in this way. The case focused on key issues:

  • Democratic rights: Whether cancelling elections denied residents their fundamental right to vote.

  • Legal process: Whether proper procedures and statutory requirements had been followed.

  • Government overreach: Whether the decision set a dangerous precedent for suspending elections without sufficient justification.

The judicial review put significant pressure on the Government. Legal proceedings would have required ministers to publicly defend their decision in court, including disclosing the reasoning and legal basis behind the cancellation.

Faced with this challenge, the Government reversed its position before the case fully progressed. In what many are calling a clear U-turn, it confirmed that the Blackburn with Darwen local elections will now go ahead as originally scheduled.

This outcome means:

  • Residents will be able to vote for their local councillors.

  • Democratic accountability at the local level is restored.

  • The precedent that elections can be challenged, and reinstated, has been firmly established.

Reform UK argues that this reversal would not have happened without legal action. By initiating the judicial review, they forced the issue into the spotlight and compelled the Government to reconsider.

The case highlights an important point: decisions affecting democratic participation can be challenged through the courts, and pressure, both legal and public, can lead to change.

For voters in Blackburn with Darwen, the result is simple but significant: your vote is back, your voice matters, and the election is on.
